What is math fluency in 4th grade? ›

In general, students should be able to complete 100 problems correctly in five minutes by the end of second grade, 150 problems correctly in five minutes by the end of third grade, 200 problems correctly in five minutes by the end of fourth grade, and so on.

In fourth grade, students focus most on using all four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division - to solve multi-step word problems involving multi-digit numbers. Fourth-grade math extends their understanding of fractions, including equal (equivalent) fractions and ordering fractions.

In fourth grade, students continue this understanding and start to compute two and three digit multiplication and division problems. Modeling is very important at this stage of understanding. You might see multiplication and division shown through equal sized groups, arrays and area models.

Even if your child has previously done well in math, the expectations are higher in fourth grade. They now have to multiply and divide with multi-digit numbers and have to work with and compare fractions. These can be hard for your child to grasp, especially if they were not doing very well before.

For example, a child is fluent in addition within 5 numbers if she is asked to add 1 + 3 and she immediately blurts out 4. A child is not fluent in addition within 5 numbers if he is asked the same 1 + 3 question and he blurts out 5 with an unsure tone and then continues to count with his fingers.
